Population Growth on the Vineyard

• 2010: 1 in 6 people on Island were 65+

• 2030: 1 in 3 projected to be 65+

The over-65 population on Martha’s Vineyard is projected to grow exponentially over the next twenty years - 134% between 2010 and 2030 - while the over-65 population throughout the U.S. grows 81% and, in Massachusetts, only 61%.

The 65+ population of Island elders is projected to grow from 2,699 in 2010 to 6,308 in 2030 - and to 7,258 by 2050.

The 85+ population is projected to grow from 391 in 2010, to 607 in 2030, and to 1,221 in 2050 (according to the UMass Donahue Institute). Also, myths notwithstanding, 50% of Island elders have low incomes (below the level of qualification for county-supported housing), 33% are counted as people with very low incomes, and 18% live below the federal poverty level.
